As a result of the new construction of Stuttgart’s main railway station, part of the current light rail tunnel between Arnulf-Klett-Platz and the Türlenstraße stop will be relocated. This follow-up measure consists of two single-track tunnel tubes and the branch and junction structures to be constructed using the cut-and-cover method.

The tubes to be constructed using the mining method start at Heilbronner Straße and reconnect to the existing tunnel at the level of Türlenstraße, with branching caverns being built shortly before for the continuation of an additional U12 light rail line into the new A1 construction area created as part of Stuttgart 21. These branching caverns are being built as a WU construction in in-situ concrete and concreted block by block using special formwork.

According to the original construction schedule, it was planned to construct the branching cavern in a “dissolved construction method” according to the principle of base, walls and calotte vault. RSB presented and offered the client a special proposal, in which it was planned to pour the base in advance, but to construct the walls and cap in one “pour”. The resulting handling advantages and the enormous time savings of this solution finally persuaded the customer to choose this variant. The 10 m long and approx. 120 ton heavy special construction is moved, positioned and shuttered fully hydraulically. The necessary intermediate conversions and transports could be carried out in cooperation with the customer and with the many years of experience of FA. RSB’s many years of experience in special and tunnel formwork construction, which also led to advantages for the system in terms of increased efficiency.
